Does this mean I need to get my tires changed?

Hello,

When I drive my '96 Saturn sl above 60 mph on the highway, the car shakes. Any ideas why (i,e need new tires??) and/or how to fix it?

btw, it is 10 yrs old and I bought it used from a friend of my brother's last year, so I think they were totally fine then.Does this mean I need to get my tires changed?
Lets take this one step at a time.

First: Check you tires.

Are they properly inflated? (use a tire pressure Gage to find out). The recommended pressure is embossed on the side of the tire.

Next check the tread wear. Most tires have a wear indicator between the tread. If you see a rubber line running across the surface of the tire your tread is worn. Optionally you can use penny to check tread depth. Take a penny and stick it in the tread with Lincolns' head down. If the top of tread doesn't reach Lincolns' head you better replace your tires. If everything looks ok this far have your tires balanced. Go to a mechanic who uses Dynamic balancing equipment. It's more accurate and the most reliable

Second: Front-end alignment

The front wheels of your car must be aligned so that the front tires point perfectly straight are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the road service. This is best checked by a certified mechanic and specialized equipment is required to make sure it's done accurately. While the mechanic is checking your alignment ask that they check your front struts at the same time. I doubt you'll need new struts, unless you've hit a few potholes at high speed, but since your car will be on a lift they may as well take a look.Does this mean I need to get my tires changed?
They need to be balanced most likely...but you could have a tire that the steel belt is separating..the best thing to do is let a tire shop look at it.

If the tires still have plenty of tread they shouldn't need replacing unless the belt is separating which can cause a blow out. Be safe let someone look at it.
at a minimum the wheels need to be balanced. Take the car to a tire store or sears and ask them to do that...they will also tell u if you need new tires because there is no tread left
It could be the tires need to be balanced or to get new tires... But look at the tires... if the tread is wearing more on one side than the other you need a front- end alignment. That's what it sounds like to me.
This can be caused by a long list of things. From your tires, to your brakes, to the suspension system, and axles, The best thing to do is take it to a respectable shop in your area, have them look at it.
A shake can be caused by a busted belt in the tires or a tire that is out of balance. Check for a broken belt by rubbing your hand around the tire and feeling for bumps or bulges. Look for missing tire weights. They are usually attached to the rims sometimes on the inside or outside. Worn tires can shake also. Worn shocks can also allow the tires to bounce at speed and cause a shake in the car. Check these things first. If all these check ok then its possible you have a mechanical problem elsewhere.
