Changing Winter Tires?

I want to get Snow Tires, but not sure if i also should get wheels too or just use the wheels that i currently use on my car. How much do basic wheels cost? I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu. If i do get one with wheels and leave them on the snow tire, can i just change the tires myself after snow season ends? do i still need to go to the shop to have them changed?Changing Winter Tires?
Get wheels as well - that way, you can do the change yourself, instead of having to have the tyres remounted twice a year. Don't go for anything fancy - just use stock steel rims.

Most who do 2 sets of tires, summer and winter, run 2 sets of rims. They keep the nice rims for the summer months w/ the performance tires.



Then they buy a used set of rims to use for winter months with winter snow tires. As long as the sets are balanced, you can change them out yourself at home just like any tire change.



You can do this with 1 set of rims. But after just 1 season of going from summer to winter and then back to summer again. You have now spent the price of the used rims.



edit: find a kid on ebay or something that is selling his malibu rims due to getting custom ones, pick them up for pennies on the dollar.
you can go to junkyard and get the wheels, but to try to save you money the tires now adays if you get a good brand you shouldn't need snow tires.
I always use an extra set of wheels with my winter tires. It makes switching them each spring and fall so much cheaper and easier since I can do it myself in my driveway in about 15 minutes.



Don't go to a scrapyard for wheels though. Junkyard wheels are not the deal they used to be. www.tirerack.com can set you up with wheels and tires and even mount and balance them and ship them up ready to bolt on the car. I would suggest a steel wheel if available as they are inexpensive and less prone to road salt damager. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 is the winter tire of choice.
you can get snow tires for as low as 60 each tire but they are just like any other tire. Buy cheap ones and dont expect much. The more expensive the better
